• Contrary to the presumption that only children are more selfish than children raised in larger families, Fehr found the onlies to be the more cooperative and selfless. They were completely untroubled by handing over toys to another child, whereas the siblings flatly refused. Fehr came to the conclusion that the onlies didn’t know to be competitive because they’d never had to compete…They weren’t afraid of sharing toys, because they didn’t understand if you gave Barbie to another child, she might come back missing her leg or head.

If people actually spent time with only children, they would know how unrealistic the the conventional wisdom is.

  • The biggest item in Philadelphia Mayor Nutter’s yearly budget request to City Council this week won’t be for police, prisons, or parks.

It will be for more than $500 million to stoke Philadelphia’s pension system, which pays retirement checks to ex-city workers and their survivors.

That pension tab will eat nearly $1 of every $5 the city raises from real estate, wage, business, and sales taxes. That’s up from $1 of every $16 a decade ago, noted city Finance Director Rob Dubow.

For everyone wondering why Philadelphia public schools are in such terrible financial shape, this is a very important clue.

  • Most of the people expressing such disapproval [of Rand Paul] are the same partisans who accuse principled non-voters or libertarians or leftists or minarchists or socialists or whomever of a naïve adolescent moral purity, and yet they cannot see fit to ally themselves with a Republican on matters like the state murder of innocent civilians and the abrogation of the rights to trial and due process because he said mean things about abortion. One notes without irony that national Democrats are doing fuck-all to protect abortion access anyway, so what any of this has to do with the price of eggs on a Tuesday is beyond me. I am actually, literally on the board of my local Planned Parenthood, and I have no trouble making such tactical alliance, yet I’m the purist?

Having the right ideas about war is more important than having the right ideas about taxes.

  • I rise today to begin to filibuster John Brennan’s nomination for the CIA I will speak until I can no longer speak. I will speak as long as it takes, until the alarm is sounded from coast to coast that our Constitution is important, that your rights to trial by jury are precious, that no American should be killed by a drone on American soil without first being charged with a crime, without first being found to be guilty by a court. That Americans could be killed in a cafe in San Francisco or in a restaurant in Houston or at their home in Bowling Green, Kentucky, is an abomination.

    Fuck yeah Rand Paul.

  • The student’s voicemail greeting triggered a lockdown at his Western Pennsylvania school after a receptionist misheard his rendition of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song. While trying to confirm an appointment with Travis Clawson, 19, the receptionist thought the message said “shooting people outside of the school.” The line is actually “shooting some b-ball outside of the school.”
